What are derivatives?

In calculus, the derivative is usually defined as the rate of change of the function with respect to the independent variable. Derivatives are generally represented by the slope of the graph or the slope having a tangent line at a particular point.

Derivatives are also stated as the slope of the line that lies at a particular point to the tangent of the curve. For the calculation of derivatives, limits play an important role in this regard. As we can calculate derivatives by using limits this process is known as the first principle.

Derivative with respect to x by first principal,

d/dx (f(x)) = limh→0 f(x + h) – f(x) / h

To reverse this process of taking derivative, we use integration also known as the antiderivative.

What are the different rules of Derivatives?

There are various rules of derivatives. Let’s discuss them briefly.

Rule of a constant function

In general, the derivative of a constant function or a constant term is always zero. Constants are all those functions that do not have any term of the variable whose you want to calculate the derivative. Such as if you want to calculate the derivative with respect to x then each term that does not have x will consider as constant.

d/dx (A) = 0

Example

Calculate the derivative of 4 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = 4

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (4)

Step 4: Apply constant function rule.

d/dx (4) = 0

Rule of a Power function

If the function is given in power, then this rule is applicable. In this rule, power must be multiplied by the coefficient if there is no coefficient then multiply the power by one and subtract one from the exponent.

d/dx xn = nxn-1

Example

Calculate the derivative of x4 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = x4

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (x4)

Step 4: Apply power of the function rule.

d/dx (x4) = 4x4-1 = 4x3

Rule of the sum of the functions

When two functions are given having an addition sign among them, then this rule is applicable. In this rule, the derivative is applied to both functions separately.

d/dx (f(x) + g(x)) = d/dx (f(x)) + d/dx (g(x))

Example

Calculate the derivative of 4x + 3x2 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = 4x + 3x2

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (4x + 3x2)

Step 4: Apply sum of the function rule.

d/dx (4x + 3x2) = d/dx (4x) + d/dx (3x2)

= 4x1-1 + (3 x 2) x2-1

= 4x0 + (6)x1

= 4(1) + 6x

d/dx (4x + 3x2) = 4 + 6x

Rule of the Difference of the functions

When two functions are given having a subtraction sign among them, then this rule is applicable. In this rule, the derivative is applied to both functions separately.

d/dx (f(x) – g(x)) = d/dx (f(x)) – d/dx (g(x))

Calculate the derivative of 4x – 3x2 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = 4x – 3x2

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (4x – 3x2)

Step 4: Apply difference of the function rule.

d/dx (4x – 3x2) = d/dx (4x) – d/dx (3x2)

= 4x1-1 – (3 x 2) x2-1

= 4x0 – (6)x1

= 4(1) – 6x

d/dx (4x – 3x2) = 4 – 6x

Rule of the Product of the functions

When two functions are given having a multiplication sign among them, then this rule is applicable. In this rule, the derivative is applied to both functions by an additional method.

d/dx (f(x) * g(x)) = f(x) d/dx (g(x)) + g(x) d/dx (f(x))

Example

Calculate the derivative of 4x * 3x2 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = 4x * 3x2

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (4x * 3x2)

Step 4: Apply product of the function rule.

d/dx (4x * 3x2) = 4x d/dx (3x2) + 3x2 d/dx (4x)

= 4x (3×2 x2-1) + 3x2 (4x1-1)

= 4x (6x) + 3x 2 (4)

= 24x2 + 12x2

= 36x 2

Rule of the Quotient of the functions

When two functions are given having a quotient sign among them, then this rule is applicable. In this rule, the derivative is applied to both functions separately.

d/dx (f(x) / g(x)) = 1/g(x)2[g(x) d/dx (f(x)) – f(x) d/dx (g(x))]

Example

Calculate the derivative of 4x / 3x2 with respect to x.

Solution

Step 1: Identify the function.

F(x) = 4x / 3x2

Step 2: Take the formula of derivative.

d/dx (f(x))

Step 3: Put the value of the function.

d/dx (4x / 3x2)

Step 4: Apply quotient of the function rule.

d/dx (4x / 3x2) = 1/(3x2)2[3x2 d/dx(4x) – 4x d/dx(3x2)]

= 1/9x4[3x2 (4x1-1) – 4x (3×2 x2-1)]

= 1/9 x 4 [3x 2 (4) – 4x (6x)]

= 1/9 x 4 [12 x 2 – 24 x 2 ]

= 1/9x4(-12x2)

= -4/3x 2

SSC CGL syllabus: Tier-1st

SSC CGL Tier-I exam consists of 4 sections. A total of 100 multiple-type questions will be asked in the exam through online mode. Each correct question carries 2 marks and 0.5 marks are deducted for each wrong answer.

A total time of 60 minutes will be given to complete all the questions (20 marks extra for persons with disabilities).

In this SSC CGL Tier-1 2021 section, four subject syllabus are included. Candidates must cover all the important topics given in SSC CGL Syllabus for Tier 1.

SSC CGL Syllabus: Tier-2nd Exam

The tier-2 exam consists of 4 different papers. In the duration of 2 hours, you must complete all 100 questions. Each correct question carries 2 marks and 0.25 marks will be deducted for wrong questions.

Aspirants should know that paper 1st and 2nd is compulsory for all the question. Also, in this SSC CGL Tier-2nd 2021 section, four subject syllabus are included.

SSC CGL Syllabus: Tier III Exam

SSC CGL Tier 3 exam syllabus is a subjective paper that will be taken offline through pen-paper mode.

Tier-III paper will have to be given by only those candidates who have applied for the post of “Statistical Investigator Grade-II” and “Compiler”.

In the duration of 60 minutes, you have to complete all the questions of the paper of 100 marks. According to the tier 3rd exam syllabus, the exam is to assess the candidates’

grammar knowledge,
vocabulary usage
writing skills in English/Hindi.

In this exam, Candidates are required to write the essay, summary, application form, etc.

SSC CGL Syllabus Tier IV

The SSC CGL Tier 4 Exam comprises skill tests that are required for certain government posts.

Candidates who secure at least the minimum qualifying marks in the examination (Tier I, II, III) can appear in the Skill Test. Data Entry Speed Test:

should have 8,000 (eight thousand) Key Depression per hour on the Computer.
A passage of about 2000 (two thousand) key depressions for 15 (fifteen) minutes.

The NDA Exam was conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for three services: the Indian Army, the Indian Navy, and the Indian Air Force.

- NDA Exam is conducted twice a year through offline mode (written test).
- The exam is conducted in two different phases, phase one is written test and phase two is an interview.
- The written test is conducted in two sittings, one for GAT and the other for Mathematics.
- The training period after selection is 3 years.
- The NDA exam consists of 2 sections- Mathematics and General Ability Test(GAT) in 5 hours duration.

Marking Scheme For NDA Exam 2022

For each correct answer, 2.5 marks will be allotted and 0.83 Marks deducted for each wrong answer.
The Mathematics section will have a total of 120 questions carrying 300 marks.
The GAT will consist of 600 marks; A total of 200 marks have been allotted for English and 400 marks for General Knowledge.
There will be a total of 150 questions in this section, out of which 50 will be from English and 100 from General Knowledge.
4 marks are allotted for each correct answer in the GAT exam. And 1.33 marks deducted will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Note: No marks were deducted for the unattempted question.

NDA Exam Pattern: SSB Interview

Candidates must strictly follow guidelines issued by UPSC NDA on the day of the exam:

You need to leave all types of digital watches, calculators, mathematical or logarithmic tables outside before entering the exam hall.
Any type of communication devices, mobile phones and pages are not allowed inside the exam hall. If found a violation of this rule, you will be liable for disciplinary action as well as a life ban from any future examination.
You are not advised to bring any valuables to the examination centre. If lost, the authorities are not responsible for it.
Cheating is strictly prohibited. Any candidate can’t share a copy from anyone. You are not allowed to give or obtain or attempt to give or obtain irregular assistance of any description.
No candidate should misbehave in any way or create any disorderly scene or harass the staff appointed by the Commission during the examination. If any such misconduct occurs, they will be severely punished for such act.
You use a ballpoint pen to fill in the details in a blank circle so that it does not exceed the circle’s boundary.
Don’t write anything on the answer sheet. You will be provided with a rough sheet for rough work.
Don’t fold, don’t write anything or don’t damage the answer sheet.
