Who is IPS Officer?

The Indian Police Service (IPS) is one of the three All India Services of the Government of India. IPS was established in 1948.

The cadre controlling authority for IPS is the Ministry of Home Affairs.

IPS exam is a part of the Indian Police Service exam Civil Services Exam (CSE) which is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

The duties of an IPS officer are not limited to the state level or the central level, and they belong to Group A of the civil services that ensure the maintenance of law and order throughout the country.

IPS officers at the state level can start with the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and go up to the Director-General of Police (DGP), which is the most coveted post for an IPS officer at the state level.

The salary for the new officer is Rs 70,000 per month. ASP, SP, and ACP get salaries around Rs 1,09,203 per month. DIG, IG, and DGP receive around INR 2,12,650 per month.

 


How to Become an IPS Officer?

1. Apply to UPSC-

After applying IPS exam, you prepare for your Prelims Exam. And you get IPS pre-exam admit card after update admit card notification.

You get this notification from the newspaper.

2. Write the Preliminary Exam of CSE

You know UPSC(IPS) Exam Divide in three parts: Prelims, Mains and Interview. First you need to clear the prelims exam and after it, you go for the mains exam.

In this section, we are going to cover the Prelims exam preparation strategy to become an IPS Officer.

Usually, the IPS prelims exam conducted in May/June, and the result will be announced in August. These notifications or any updates will be announced on the official website of UPSC.

This exam comprises two qualifying papers(General Studies & Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT)) in which 200 marks allotted for each paper. Both papers are objective type.

1.General Studies: Candidate should have knowledge about current events,

2. CSAT: The candidate should have knowledge about comprehension,

Note: It is mandatory to qualify for the main examination that you must score at least 33% in the preliminary examination.

3: Write the CSE Mains

The Mains exam is the second part of the UPSC exam. To become an IPS officer, you need to clear the mains exam after qualify the prelims exam.

  • The IPS Mains exam is usually held in October.
  • The exam will be of descriptive type.

The first thing to become an IPS officer, you need to be eligible to fill the IPS exam form. Must fulfill all the requirements of UPSC to become an IPS officer.

1.1 Nationality criteria For IPS 

The candidate must be a citizen of India to fill the IPS Exam form.

1.2. Age-Limit For IPS

  • The candidate must be 21(Minimum age) years of age in the year the exam will be conducted, before filling the form.
  • The maximum age limit for IPS is 32 year(age relaxation check below)
  • So, the candidate’s date of birth should be between 2nd August 1989 and 1st August 2000 who want to give IPSC Exam 2021.

Important Points:-

  • Competitors having a place with SC/ST/OBC classification who fall under the classification of Ex-Servicemen/Physical or Visually Impaired/Hearing Impaired will be qualified for total age unwinding under both the classes.
  • The term ex-serviceman has been characterized in the Ex-Servicemen (Re-work in Civil Services and Posts) Rules, 1979.
  • Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers including ECOs/SSCOs who have self-released will not be eligible for age relaxation as mentioned above.
  • These certificates should be submitted only while applying for UPSC Mains Exam.
  • While entering the date of birth online while applying for UPSC Preliminary exam, ensure that it is recorded in the matriculation certificate. Otherwise, disciplinary action may be taken against the candidate by the Commission.

 

UPSC Educational Qualification Criteria to become IPS Officer

  • To take the UPSC exam, a candidate must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
  • Even those candidates who have written the final year examinations of the qualifying examination (Bachelor’s degree) and waiting for the result and the candidate will write the final examination can apply. . But, these candidates have to submit the proof of qualifying for the exam while applying for the IPS main exam.
  • Candidates having professional/technical qualifications recognized by the Government as equivalent to the technical degrees are also eligible.
  • MBBS candidates who have not completed their internship by the time of applying for UPSC Mains will be given a provisional admission to take Mains, provided they submit a copy of the certificate from the concerned University/Institute authority that they have passed the requisite is. Final professional medical examination. At the time of the interview, such candidates will have to produce a certificate from the University/Institute stating that they have fulfilled all the requirements (including completion of internship) for the award of the medical degree.
